SSE EVO 101 Workshop:

Hands on Evolution for K-12 Educators

Friday, 25 June - All Day

Evolutionary biology is a dynamic and exciting field.  Science educators in the Portland area are invited to join evolutionary biologists and other science educators for “Evolution 101” – a one day workshop to be held at the Portland Convention Center on June 25.   Come learn about recent research in the field of evolution, talk with evolutionary biologists, and attend sessions that feature hands-on activities for teaching evolution to all ages.  Evolution is the unifying concept of biology and a centerpiece of science education standards in Oregon BUT also at times one of the more challenging topics to teach.  How to teach it effectively? How to deal with student preconceptions? How to make it fun and relevant to their lives?  If you’ve been asking yourself questions like these, and are interested in updating your repertoire of evolution-related teaching materials,  we invite you to attend “Evolution 101”.
  • Talks, panel discussions and hands-on activities demonstrating effective and fun ways to teach evolution
  • FREE teaching resources (Giant Evolution Timeline and Activity Guide for K-6 teachers and SimBiotic EvoBeaker lab software for 7-12 teachers), and other give-aways for participants.
  • An opportunity to meet and chat with professional evolutionary biologists who both study and teach evolution.
  • Attend the Gould Award Lecture, given by the recipient of The Stephen Jay Gould Prize, awarded annually by the Society for the Study of Evolution to recognize individuals whose sustained and exemplary efforts have advanced public understanding of evolutionary science and its importance in biology, education, and everyday life in the spirit of Stephen Jay Gould.
  • Workshop participants are welcome to attend the Evolution 2010 meeting following the EVO 101 K-12 Workshop ($25 registration fee).
  • A schedule for the workshop can be found here.
  • Download the flier here to distribute to friends and colleagues

Lunch-Time Workshops

Outreach Workshop (Saturday, 26 June Noon - 1:30 PM)

Are you planning a teacher workshop?  Although many faculty have long been involved in outreach, since the adoption of the Broader Impacts criteria in NSF grants, there is a growing interest in outreach projects.  Outreach projects can take many forms, bring you in contact with different audiences, and require varying amounts of time and effort.  In this session, we’ll focus on providing workshops for local teachers.  We’ll cover best practices, logistics, partners and other resources that can make your outreach project go more smoothly.  Join us and share your ideas and experiences.
