Required: Bachelor's degree in biology.
Preferred qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge of nucleic acid-research techniques and molecular-genetic techniques. Experience in acquiring and storing supplies, materials, and
equipment in a biological laboratory. Experience with scientific equipment used in a genetics
laboratory. Experience in DNA sequencing, sequencing analysis, and microsatallite
DNA marker development (including genomic library preparation and cloning). Experience in
high-throughput genotyping and a strong background in molecular biology. Preference will be
given to candidates with the some of the following skills: DNA and RNA work; experience with
robotics in extraction and PCR setup; DNA sequencing, RT-PCR. We also
emphasize the ability to interact and work collaboratively with others, as the lab manager will
work closely with post-docs, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers. |
| Responsibilities |
Conducts research on genetic and molecular-ecological analysis of animals, plants and microorganisms. Trains new laboratory personnel on laboratory techniques and laboratory procedures. Performs routine laboratory related functions. |

The American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) anticipates hiring (contingent upon the expected receipt of federal grant funds) a PhD-trained scientist with experience working at the interface of science, communications, and public policy to serve as a Public Affairs Representative (PAR). The PAR will be a full-time AIBS employee, reporting to the Director of Public Policy. The PAR will serve as a liaison between the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) Board, staff and stakeholders, and the broader science community and public.
The PAR will work to identify partnerships for NEON with local to international projects that could benefit from or contribute to NEON, provide the broader science community with information about NEON-related developments, plan, attend, and report on briefings and similar projects that will increase public awareness of NEON.
Knowledge, skills, and experience:
1. A PhD in a biological/ecological science and at least five years' work experience in science, public outreach, science communication, or science policy are preferred.
2. Experience working for a non-governmental organization or government agency is highly desirable.
3. Appreciation and understanding of the culture of the science community are essential.
4. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
5. Experience building and working with coalitions is highly desired.
6. The ability to work on tight deadlines with short turnaround times is essential.
7. The capacity to simultaneously manage multiple projects is required.
8. Sound judgment, creativity, the capacity to quickly synthesize diverse sources of information, and the ability to anticipate future work product needs are highly desired. |
| Responsibilities |
The PAR will:
1. Serve as a liaison to NEON, spending roughly 70 percent of his/her time in the NEON office and 30 percent in the AIBS office in Washington, DC;
2. Work with the NEON Public Information Representative to develop materials and implement a communication strategy to ensure that the scientific community, NEON stakeholders, and various decision-makers are aware of NEON activities;
3. Develop effective methods to ensure the timely communication of information between NEON and its various stakeholders;
4. Work with the AIBS Public Policy Director to identify additional stakeholders that would benefit from engaging with NEON;
5. Prepare reports for the NEON Board, staff and user community about local, national and international initiatives;
6. Prepare materials for decision-makers. |

Applicant’s must have a Ph.D. in biology, zoology or wildlife biology with emphasis in ecology of fish or mammals by the position starting date. Knowledge of current techniques in biological experimental design and statistical analysis is required. The ability to effectively teach and mentor students in these fields and to interact with faculty and staff in a manner that promotes collegiality is required. Post-doctoral experience preferred.
Teaching responsibilities include general ecology, ichthyology or mammalogy, introductory biology, and advanced courses in candidate’s area of interest. The applicant must be able to guide undergraduate and graduate student research in the appropriate discipline and maintain a modest research program resulting in publications. Duties will include curation of the fish or mammal collection. |
